It is a dicotyledonous, angiosperm, tropical species, also known as "Paper Flower". It is a strong woody climber with sharp spines along the young branches.

Its leaves are simple, ovate-like and green in colour. But the leaves of cultivar are yellow green colour with yellow margin. Grown in opposite, the leaves are leathery, smooth margins and a slender-pointed narrow base. It blooms throughout the year, blooming especially well in summer. Flowers are regular and bisexual, but very small (about 5mm each). Three petaloid purplish pink, yellow or red bracts (modified leaves) surrounds a cluster of 3 milky white flowers.

Although it is very common in Hong Kong, we have no information about its fruits.
