A deciduous small tree, up to 7 m tall.

The leaves are glossy, elliptic, 4-6 cm long and they grow in opposite pattern.

Flowers are orange-red in colour and have five to seven petals which remain on the top of the fruit. Flowers bloom in May.

The fruits are yellow, orange-red, leathery skinned berries. There are several locules inside the fruit, each containing a large number of seeds. The seeds are covered with a pink acid-sweet pulp which is edible. Fruits can be harvested from July to August.

This plant is mainly grown for ornamental purpose. They are sold mainly during the Chinese mid-festival period.
