It is an erect, slow-growing shrub, usually 0.9 - 1.5 m in height, with many stems.
Leaf blades are attached directly to the stem in opposite pairs. They are inverted-ovate in shape, with the size of 7.6 - 12.7 cm long, with short-pointed or blunt tips and entire margins.
It is bloomed in summer. Red flowers are produced on the top of branches. Each flower has four rounded lobes spreading from the end of a long, slender tube which looks like a stem.
The fruits are small round berries. They will turn dark red when mature.
Cultivars are found with yellow and red flowers with pointed
corolla-lobes. The leaves are smaller in size, too.
