It is herb with an erect stem about 1m tall but more or less prostrate at the lower part which is about 2.5cm in diameter. It is cultivated for ornamental purposes.

Its leaf is oblong to oblongate-lanceolate like and it is 15-30cm long, and 7-12cm wide. The apex is tapering to a sharp point; the base is round or acute; both sides are dark green and glabrous, with numerous white or pale yellow irregular variegated patches. The stalk sheath-like below the middle part forms a broad groove.

The spathe is 15-18cm long; and the stalk is about 9cm long; the spadix is about the same length as the spathe and it is about 2.5cm in diameter.

It is poisonous when eaten. It causes severe corrosive burning of the mouth, the throat and the stomach.
