These dicotyledonous, angiosperm plants are about 50-90cm in height. However, these plants usually grow to a height of 45cm. Their stems are covered with short hair and not very strong. It comes from Indonesia, but it is a very common cultivated plant all over the world.

It has soft-textured leaves in a range of vivid colors, some incorporating 3 or more colors, such as red, purple, green and yellow. The leaves are heart-shaped and often about 5cm long. In autumn its soft, small, tail-like purple flowers will develop. It can be propagated by stem cutting. The dried leaves are a kind of spice for cooking.
