It is a low-growing tree, which seldom reaches 2m in cultivation.

However, it can grow up to 6m tall at wild. It is a monocotyledonous, angiosperm plant and comes from Madagascar.

Its leaves have parallel venation, and are arranged like feathers. Leaves are light green in color, and slightly arched. The stems are as smooth as bamboos, there are ring-shaped pattern on the stem, and leaves always grow on the top of the plant.

It blooms in early summer; male and female flowers grow on the same plant.

Fruits are yellow or orange when they are fully-grown.
